THE Welsh badger cull has prompted extreme reactions. Here's a sample. "Each night there designer handbags are tens of thousands of uncontrolled badger movements between farms, and there is no doubt in my mind that badgers are the main cause of the spread of the disease." FUW President Gareth Vaughan "To slaughter badgers in Wales when trials of a vaccine for badgers are about to get underway is a truly abhorrent decision. This is cheap, nasty politics of the very worst kind." Badger Trust chairman David Williams "While I don't want the wholesale slaughter of wildlife we cannot afford to sit back and ignore the very real threat posed by this disease to animal health and the farming industry." Tory AM Brynle Williams "This is a political decision designed to appease farmers and protect the seats of politicians." Justin Kerswell, Viva! The Glastonbury and Street area is a popular destination for a day out. Street, a former shoe-making centre, boasts the Clarks Outlet Village, with more than 90 stores offering as much as 60 per cent price discounts on famous branded goods. Whloesale Beads Wholesale If mammon is not your thing, Glastonbury can offer all manner of spiritual avenues, ranging from sound healing and reiki through to rebirthing, tarot and runes. The area can also offer some fine walking - and not just the short and overcrowded stroll to the top of Glastonbury Tor. To escape the crystals and beads, the outlet stores and the tiresome car parks with no spaces, I headed east from Glastonbury into an area that one guidebook describes as the 'Brue Meadows'. The road from Glastonbury out to Shepton Mallet has been said to be paved with the stones of the ruined abbey. It would take an earthquake to confirm the truth of this suggestion, but along the local country lanes there are houses with the paschal lamb inset as a decoration the walls. A mile or two out of Glastonbury, follow a quiet lane away from the main Shepton road and you will find yourself in the heart of West Pennard, a sturdy and unpretentious place. Arthur Mee was clearly impressed by the village church. He was struck by the tower, with a fine old yew and a magnificent cedar as its companion. He wrote of 'a beauty 500 Hip Hop Rings years old with a lead pepper-pot spire, a lovely battlemented parapet, panelled pinnacles and sculptures round the top. Its west front has eight winged angels and rich canopied niches, with the tower rising above a mass of parapets and gargoyles'. In 1838, West Pennard briefly entered the nation's conscience. The locals produced the largest Cheddar Cheese ever made, weighing some 11 hundredweight and made from the milk of 737 cows. A vat had to be especially made for the occasion, with this mighty offering being a gift for Queen Victoria. It was exhibited at no less a venue than the Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly, but ended up being fed to nothing more than the local pigs . . . when it was tasted, it was found to be lacking the rich, pungent tang that should have accompanied its massive girth. Above the church, the walk climbs on to Pennard Hill, with exceptional views at every turn. The outlook across the church tower towards the Vale of Avalon is especially memorable, with a marvellous view of Glastonbury Tor, described as 'that mysterious implant from elfland, crowned by a solitary tower, looking mist- wreathed and magical on dull days'. The description went on to talk of a 'violent burnished green in bright weather when its terraces stand out like serpents' coils and sheep graze its slopes'. Walking across Pennard Hill, there was this quite exceptional view to the north, extending beyond Worthy Farm Hip Hop Watches to the hills above Pilton. If these names sound familiar, it is because this is the location of the Glastonbury Festival, arguably the biggest and best festival on the planet. It was then that I had this crazy idea - imagine walking this way on a summer's evening, maybe the last weekend in June. The sound of Kings of Leon or the Verve could be amplified across the Brue Meadows . . . maybe this is one walk that should be filed away until the summer. Profitable Company Trying to Cut Workers' Wages WILLIAMSON, N.Y., April 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Over 300 members of Local 220 of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Fashion Watches Union, UFCW, voted to authorize a strike if no agreement can be reached with Mott's for workers at the company's Williamson, NY facility. The vote, which was 250-5, gives authorization for the union to call a strike if the company continues to engage in unfair labor practices and refuses to bargain. "We may have no choice," said RWDSU Local 220 President Mike Leberth. "All we want is a fair contract but the company refuses to even talk to us." "We want to reach an agreement with Mott's," said RWDSU Representative Ron Duncan. "We stand ready to bargain but the company has taken this position that we should just shut up and accept whatever they are offering. It's really disgraceful that they want to take away from their employees at a time when the company is doing well." "The employees of Mott's deserve better," said RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum. "The company should be working with us to resolve whatever issues there may be. But from the beginning they came to the table looking for drastic cuts to workers' wages and pension even though the company is very profitable. There is no economic reason, no justification, for taking money away from the workers. None. They are simply trying to take advantage of the bad economy and high unemployment in the area." Mott's LLP is a subsidiary of Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (DPSG). Last year alone DPSG earned $555 million in profits. "Mott's told us we were simply making too much," said Leberth. "They said they know they are profitable. I guess they figure they can put their hands in our pockets and nobody will care." Hair accessories Cheap "These are hardworking people, decent people, and what the company is trying to do will cause a lot of hardship," said Appelbaum. "That they won't even try and work this out is inexcusable. They may give us no choice but to strike." Despite Mott's aggressive stance at the bargaining table the union was trying to reach an agreement that would protect workers' wages, health coverage and other benefits. The company made an offer on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, that the union brought to the membership for a vote. That offer was rejected by a vote of 272-18 and the union sought to continue bargaining. The company refused and even threatened to cut workers' wages if their "final" offer was not accepted. The union has filed unfair labor practices with the National Labor Relations Board over the company's conduct. "The Blackstone beads company has violated the National Labor Relations Act and we are confident that the board will find in our favor," said Duncan. The RWDSU represent 100,000 members in the United States and Canada and is affiliated with the United Food and Commercial Workers.
